A jury has begun deliberating the fate of Collins, the former Wilkes-Barre police officer accused by several women of sexual assault, after a lengthy period of closing arguments on Friday. Check back for updates.
The original story follows. Collins, 55, of Wright Township, has been on trial throughout the week on 36 counts related to the allegations that he forced seven women into sexual encounters in order to avoid prison time.
One of those witnesses that the defense called was Eric Konnick, who said he and another man had been in the car with one of the alleged victims, something which the woman herself said during her own testimony. Criminal investigators in the case said they had been unable to find the two male passengers in the car.
Walker reminded jurors of other things that he thinks are inconsistencies in the case, namely that the women were often unable to remember the exact time that the alleged assault occurred. According to Walker, Collins was a model officer, who proudly held up the standards of the Wilkes-Barre Police Department.
Anderson, obviously, had a different take. Several of the women accused Collins of forcing them to perform oral sex on him in an exchange for making charges disappear.
Anderson specifically highlighted one woman who began to weep openly when Anderson showed her a photo of the area where she claims her rape occurred. Reminding jurors that, in sex crime cases such as these, they can convict on the strength of testimony from the alleged victims alone, Anderson asked jurors to consider why they would be doing anything other than telling the truth.

According to Anderson, Collins preyed on the women who struggled with substance abuse, saying that they would make easy targets. He thought they were throw-away women. They are not throw-away people.
